In 1856. Petr Semenov made two trips to Lake Issyk-Kul located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, to its eastern and western extremities, and covered the Trans - Ili Alatau and its southern chain-Kungei-Alatau with a dense network of routes. From the shores of Issyk-Kul, he was the first European to see the majestic panorama of the mysterious Tien Shan. After wintering in Barnaul, where he was engaged in processing the collected materials, in the spring of 1857, P. P. Semenov again went to the Tien Shan Mountains. This time, he managed to penetrate far into the depths of the mountains. Having reached the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, it crosses the northern chain of the Tien Shan-Terskaya Alatau through rocky valleys and penetrates to the sources of the Narym River. A little later, for the second time, he made a bold and difficult ascent into the heart of the Heavenly Mountains, to the watershed pass between the lakes. Balkhash in the west and Oz. Lob-nor in the east, to the Sary-Jas river, belonging to the Torima River system. Thus, P. P. Semenov was the first European explorer to enter the slopes of the majestic Khan Tengri.

Petr Petrovich Semenov's journey to the Tien Shan was crowned with major scientific discoveries in Kyrgyzstan.

One of them was the proof of the absence of active volcanoes in the Tien Shan, the existence of which was confirmed by the authority of Humboldt. The refutation of Humboldt's theory was of great importance not only for a correct understanding of the geology of the entire Asian continent and Kyrgyzstan, but also for a correct understanding of the essence of volcanism itself.

He first established the height of the snow line in the Sky Ridge, which he determined from 11,000 to 11,500 feet. When Humboldt doubted the correctness of these calculations, considering that the snow line should pass much lower, P. P. Semenov thoroughly proved to him the correctness of his observations.
